First edition of the Elogia virorum bellica with the renown woodcuts by Tobias Stimmer. The artist was sent to Como by the publisher to copy the portraits in the Giovio museum. "The first comprehensive and generally accessible source for the likeness of persons in whom the contemporary learned public was interested" (Jakob Burckhardt). 2 works in one volume, folio (348 x 228mm). Frontispieces within woodcut borders, numerous portraits and woodcuts, with final blank in first work (waterstain throughout, a1 with bottom margin reinforced, some leaves with corners neatly restored). Modern vellum reusing older vellum, modern manuscript title on spine and ties, preserved in a marbled paper modern case.
