The world of Poggi

A retrospective dedicated to Roberto Poggi | Published on 23/05/2022

The exhibition "THE WORLD OF POGGI - The workshop of design and arts" will open on June 1st at the Musei Civici in Pavia,

curated by Stefano A. Poli, our expert in 20th century Decorative Arts and Design, together with Roberto Dulio and Fabio Marino. The retrospective dedicated to the figure of the Pavian Roberto Poggi (1924-2020) enhances his key role in the history of Italian design.  An homage to the cabinetmaker and entrepreneur from Pavia, considered one of the founding fathers of the Italian modern furniture industry. The exhibition's catalogue is the homonymous volume published by Electa, presented by the three curators and authors in 2019 at Il Ponte Casa d'Aste in the halls of Palazzo Crivelli, which illustrates to the public the multifaceted activity of Poggi and his decisive role in the dialogue with different generations of architects and designers, including Vico Magistretti, Marco Zanuso, Afra, Tobia Scarpa and Franco Albini.

Thus Franco Albini mentions the partnership with Roberto Poggi: “I believe there must be a desire from both to create something together. Desire and not need. Otherwise the design becomes less poetic [...] the common thread must not be the machine [...] there must be no conditioning by the implementation method before the project is conceived" in: Stefano Andrea Poli, Roberto Poggi: the rigor and freedom of the profession, in “The World of Poggi. The design and arts workshop ", Electa, Milan 2019
