PIVATI, Giovanni. Francesco (1689-1764) - Nuovo Dizionario Scientifico e Curioso Sacro-Profano.  Venice: 1746-1751, Benedetto Milocco. First edition of the first Encyclopedia in Italian, orderded alphabetically. Very few other encyclopedic works of the time were so accurate and extensive; the Frech Encyclopedie would be printed only in 1751 and Britannica in 1768. Of this work, which was expensive to produced, only 500 copies were printed (Treccani). A very good copy. 10 volumes, folio (366 x 245mm). Half-titles, vol. I with fine engraved frontispiece and title in red and black, vol. II with a folding astronomical table, vol. III with a folding genealogical tree, vol. V with 2 folding tables, 598 engraved plates of which 4 folding and 2 with fine contemporary colouring, fine engraved vignettes and initials (occasional light stains, vol. II with repaired tears at plates 42-43 without loss, vol. IV with final text leaf repaired, few other marginal tears). Contemporary half calf, green panels (some fading and rubbing). (10)
