LOW, David (1786-1859) - The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Islands. London: Longman, Orme, Brown and Green, [1840]-1842. First edition of The Breeds including sections on the horse (8 plates), the ox (22), the sheep (21), the goat (unillustrated), and the pig (5). David Low, professor of agriculture in the University of Edinburgh, commissioned the artist William Shiel to paint portraits of the animal subjects from which the magnificent lithographed plates were made. A good copy. 2 volumes, folio (424 x 321mm). 56 hand-coloured lithographed plates by Fairland after W. Nicholson, from paintings by William Shiels, tissue guards (without half-titles). Contemporary green half morocco gilt, gilt spine and edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Il Polifilo (bookseller's ticket). (2)
