SCACCHI, Francesco (1577-1656) - De Salubri potu dissertatio. Rome: Alessandro Zannetti, 1622. A fine copy of the very rare first edition of the work that gives Italy the absolute supremacy on sparkling wine making over France and the most important XVII treatise on wine. The author, Francesco Scacchi, invented the bubbly wine years before Dom Perignon at the Abbey of Hatuvillers. In chapter XXI the term "spia spuma" proves the theory. A copy of the same book was bought in 1997 at Sotheby's for 40 million liras by the Lunellis. 4to (184 x 134mm). Engraved frontispiece, woodcut initials and woodcut full-page illustration. The copy is without a2 as the first issue described in SBN. Modern marbled boards backed in calf, gilt title, marbled edges Bitting 417-8; Bing 1777; Vicaire 771; just 10 copies recorded on SBN on line. The lot is accompanied by an export license.
