BURCKHARDT, Johann Ludwig (1784-1817) - Travels in Arabia, comprehending an account of those territories in Hedjaz. London: Henry Colburn, 1829. First 8vo edition of this posthumous work edited by William Ouseley. The 4to edition appearing earlier the same year. Under the patronage of Muhammed Ali Pasha, and using his own knowledge of Arabic and Koranic law 'to assume the Muselman character', Burckhardt entered Mecca in 1814 and stayed for three months. According to William Leake, his journals 'transmitted.. the most accurate and complete account of the Hedjaz, including the cities of Mekka and Medina, which had ever been received in Europe' (preface, p. iv). 2 volumes, 8vo (206 x 129mm).
