TORTELLI, Giovanni (c.1400-1460) - De orthographia tractatus. Venice: Bartolomeo Zani, 1503. Fine edition in contemporary binding of a humanist reference work on classical (Latin) grammar, with special attention to the Greek derivation of Latin words and their orthography. It was first printed Rome in 1471. Giovanni Tortelli from Arezzo was an early Italian humanist and librarian at the court of Pope Nicolaus V (1387-1455). Folio (309 x 202mm). 13 line woodcut initial on a2, woodcut mark at the end (some waterstaining on top margin of final leaves, some staining at beginning and end). Contemporary boards backed in calf, title on paper label on spine (lacking clasps). Provenance: Guglielmo Durandi (contemporary inscription) - Nicolaus Zati (contemporary inscription of l. I recto of a family from Florence?) - Scipionis et Zatij (contemporary to the inscription on l. I recto) Can(onicae?) S. Vigilij (slightly later, XVI secolo) - some more recent drawings on front flyleaf.
