Very scarce second German edition in contemporary pigskin of this famous work on agriculture, gardening, cattle raising, as well as hunting and hawking. Chapters XLV, XLVI and XLVII concern falconry. The work was first published as 'Praedium rusticum' 1554. An amazingly popular French version 'L'agriculture et maison rustique' was first published in Paris 1564, translated by his son-in-law, Jean Liébault, it became a Renaissance bestseller with at least 80 editions by the fall of Napoleon. The work was translated into the English, German, Dutch, Italian and Scandinavian languages. Folio (325 x 212mm). Title page in red and black within elaborate woodcut border, numerous large woodcuts after Tobias Stimmer and J. Amman probably cut by the printer Bernard Jobin himself (light waterstaining and browning, small wormholes on final leaves). Bound in contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, with original clasps (later ties, spine lightly defective, some rubbing). Provenance: Maurice Villaret (1877-1946, neurologist; exlibris). The lot is accompanied by an import certificate.
